On Friday, March 11, an earthquake hit Japan with an 8.9 magnitude. This devastating earthquake left homes and building completely destroyed. The earthquake was then followed by a tsunami with 23 ft. waves.
The earthquake struck at 2:46 p.m. and was the largest and most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. The earthquake effected people all along the 1,300 mile coast and effected Tokyo as well.
Areas including South America, Canada and Alaska were put on an alert for large waves but the conditions were not nearly as bad as in Japan.
Olentangy Liberty High School sophomore Andrea R. feels overwhelmed by the number of students walking through the hallways each day. “It’s like a traffic jam,” Andrea R. said, “I feel like there’s no room.” Other students express similar complaints.
Every year, it seems that Olentangy Liberty High School gains more and more students as the beloved Senior class graduates, and the incoming Freshman classes continue to grow at an alarming rate. As the freshman classes continue to grow, OLHS faces the dilemma of overpopulation, or outgrowing the maximum capacity of students OLHS can hold.
The maximum capacity for OLHS at its current size is 1,600 students. The school currently has 1,480 students, plus the 80 to 100 students that will enter the building for the 2012 school year. Liberty principal Randy Wright, the school is projected to go over capacity at the beginning of the 2013 school year.
Have you ever dreamed of singing and walking backwards? Are you able to make practices after school?
We are challenging the other Olentangy high schools in a LIP DUB CHALLENGE! We are hoping to put together a lip dub, but record it backwards! So, if you are interested… get your game face on and sign up on the journalism board in the main hallways (just outside the library).
Or, tweet @olhsjournalism to let us know. Also follow us on Facebook for more updates.
A recent Columbus Dispatch article, “18-year-old killed in Perry County crash” highlighted the hazard of teen drivers by listing off multiple injuries, and even a death. All of the passengers were teenagers, and half of them were 18 years or younger. It seems that today when teen car accidents are mentioned, there are always multiple people in the car.

Too many people don’t give thought to their words and actions. Then again, there are people who do it simply because they wanted the possible outcome to happen. There’s a want to cause damage, or a lack of interest in what could come from their actions. That’s called bullying. Surveys over school bullying in 2009 found that “75 percent of students are subjected to harassment by a bully or cyber-bully and experience physical, psychological and or emotional abuse.”
November is the time for voters to go to the polls and cast their votes for their local government. Although the Presidential election is not until 2012, President Obama has visited many states, encouraging them to vote democratic this election and began to campaign for the next Presidential election.

When someone thinks of game shows like Jeopardy, many people think of extremely smart people who are anything but ordinary. Little do they know that students right here at Liberty have the mental quickness and knowledge to join the competitive, Jeopardy-like team, In the Know.
In the Know is an academic quiz team that competes with other schools around Ohio. Four students play at a time for three rounds, trying to earn more points than the opposing team. The Liberty starters include seniors Max Dunbar, Ryan Menges, Grace Pyo and Jay Shah.

Profuse water diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain are the symptoms of cholera. It is transmitted through contaminated drinking water or food, and is an infection of the small intestine.
“I think what we are dealing with here is the long-term effects of the hurricane here. It’s unfortunate, but natural for things like this to happen. We often just ignore the year later effects,” social studies teacher Peter Krosnosky said.
